Then James Carville drops an extraordinary theory: Donald Trump actually wants Republicans to lose the midterms.

We test that claim against what Trump is actually doing—and Carville’s own argument.

But none of that prepares us for the final story.

Following the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, her defense attorney publicly appealed directly to President Trump for a pardon.

There’s just one enormous problem.

WTF Is Going On? Trump Gets Pulled Into Lindsay Clancy Case as Carville’s Midterm Theory Collides With the Facts

At some point, a news cycle stops looking like news and starts looking like somebody handed reality a bottle of tequila and took away the car keys.

Welcome to September 2026.

In roughly 24 hours, Missouri managed to find itself caught between conflicting court rulings over which congressional map it should use.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were back on the phone discussing Ukraine.

The American political press found time to investigate Donald Trump’s hair.

A 1937 painting resurfaced because people swear somebody in it is holding what looks suspiciously like a smartphone.

James Carville announced that he may have finally figured Donald Trump out.

And then Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney decided to drag the President of the United States into one of the most disturbing murder cases in America.

Yes.

Seriously.

CARVILLE HAS A THEORY

Let’s start with James Carville.

Carville has developed an extraordinary explanation for Donald Trump’s behavior heading into the 2026 midterms:

Trump wants Republicans to lose.

Not accidentally lose.

Not pursue a strategy that backfires.

Actually lose.

Carville argues that Trump believes he saved the Republican Party, taught Republicans how to win, was subsequently betrayed by them and now wants to punish them.

His words get even stronger.

Trump “hates them.” He wants to “torture them.” He wants to make Republican candidates “squirm.”

Carville himself admits his theory sounds insane.

That part we can agree on.

The problem isn’t that Carville thinks Trump’s political strategy could be terrible.

That is absolutely open for debate.

The problem is that he makes the gigantic leap from:

“I think what Trump is doing could hurt Republicans.”

to:

“Trump therefore wants Republicans to lose.”

Those are nowhere near the same argument.

And Carville never produces evidence establishing the second one.

No internal memo.

No Trump statement.

No campaign directive.

No adviser saying Trump has decided to deliberately sacrifice Congress.

Instead, Carville looks at political behavior he believes is irrational and assigns a motive to it.

There’s an inconvenient problem with that theory.

Trump says he intends to spend between $400 million and $500 million from MAGA Inc. helping Republicans in the November elections.

He told reporters he would spend whatever amount was necessary to help the party, although Republican strategists have questioned how effectively such huge sums can be deployed this late in the campaign.

You are free to argue Trump might spend the money badly.

You can argue the candidates he supports are wrong.

You can argue making himself the center of the midterms creates problems for vulnerable Republicans.

But spending hundreds of millions trying to elect Republicans is a strange way to execute a secret master plan to make Republicans lose.

And then Carville does something even better.

He accidentally explains Trump’s strategy himself.

Carville acknowledges that some Republican candidates need Trump voters to show up so badly that they may have little choice but to stay connected to him.

His argument is essentially that candidates can be trapped:

Get too close to Trump and potentially alienate other voters.

Get too far away from Trump and potentially lose the Trump voters you desperately need.

Carville describes it as being damned either way.

Bingo.

You just supplied the competing explanation.

Trump may not believe Republicans need less Trump.

He may believe Republicans need more Trump because Trump voters don’t automatically become Republican midterm voters.

Whether that strategy works is a separate question.

There are genuine warning signs for Republicans heading toward November, and some GOP strategists worry that Trump’s political standing could burden candidates in competitive states and districts.

But “this strategy might fail” is evidence of political risk.

It is not evidence of intentional sabotage.

That distinction matters.

MEANWHILE, MISSOURI APPARENTLY HAS TWO REALITIES

If Carville’s theory isn’t confusing enough, Missouri decided to conduct a live demonstration of quantum election law.

The Missouri Supreme Court blocked a Republican-backed congressional map from taking effect without voter approval through a referendum.

Missouri asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh declined the emergency request.

Simple enough.

Except a federal district judge then issued a temporary ruling requiring officials to use the new map.

Reuters described the result exactly as it deserved to be described:

Conflicting rulings.

Election officials were suddenly facing different judicial commands over congressional boundaries shortly before Election Day.

So if you happen to live in Missouri and are wondering which congressional district you’re voting in…

Excellent question.

Apparently the courts would like a little more time to get back to you.

WHILE ALL THIS IS HAPPENING, TRUMP CALLS PUTIN

Meanwhile, the President was working on the slightly less important matter of war and peace.

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently spoke as American diplomatic efforts continued to restart negotiations over Ukraine.

The administration has sent envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to meet officials in both Moscow and Kyiv, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described some of the ideas presented by the Americans as constructive, while major disagreements remain unresolved.

No peace agreement exists.

No breakthrough has been announced.

Russia and Ukraine remain deeply divided over territory and the terms necessary to stop the fighting.

Fine.

Complex story.

World-changing consequences.

So naturally another section of the American news cycle had an equally important question:

What the hell happened to Trump’s hair?

Because apparently photographs showed his famously blond hair looking darker.

This became news.

Hair professionals were consulted.

Analysis was conducted.

Civilization endured.

And somewhere James Carville was still trying to determine whether changing hair color was also part of Trump’s secret operation to destroy the Republican Party.

AND THEN THERE’S LINDSAY CLANCY

But none of this gets us to the story that actually caused me to read the headline twice.

Lindsay Clancy.

Clancy was prosecuted in Massachusetts after the deaths of her three young children in January 2023.

Her defense argued that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible.

The prosecution disputed that defense.

The jury eventually deadlocked.

Mistrial.

President Trump then publicly acknowledged that he had been following the case and described what happened as horrible.

Already unusual.

A sitting president commenting on a nationally watched state murder prosecution is going to attract attention.

But then Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, appeared on Good Morning America.

And he made an appeal directly to Trump.

He asked the President to consider…

pardoning Lindsay Clancy.

There is one small problem.

By “small,” I mean Article II of the United States Constitution.

The president’s ordinary pardon power applies to federal offenses.

Clancy was prosecuted under Massachusetts state law.

Reuters reported both the extraordinary request and the obvious constitutional obstacle: Trump does not possess presidential pardon authority over the Massachusetts charges. Prosecutors can also retry Clancy following the mistrial.

So here we are.

Missouri has competing congressional-map orders.

Donald Trump is talking with Vladimir Putin about Ukraine.

James Carville thinks Trump secretly wants to destroy his own party despite Trump saying he intends to deploy hundreds of millions of dollars to help elect Republicans.

The press is investigating Trump’s follicles.

And Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney just asked the President of the United States to exercise a pardon power he does not have over her Massachusetts prosecution.

Maybe “breaking news” no longer covers it.

Maybe we’ve finally reached the point where the English language can be streamlined.

Three letters.

One question.
