The Washington Post reports that advisers have become increasingly blunt with Trump about Republican polling and that the president has become more engaged in the midterm fight. Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll places Trump’s approval at 35%, with Democrats leading Republicans 44%-37% on its national generic congressional ballot.

Add rising gasoline prices, the Iran war, affordability concerns and the fact that Americans have already begun casting early ballots, and the countdown is no longer theoretical.

43 DAYS LEFT: Trump’s Midterm Clock Is Already Running

Forget Election Day. The political countdown has already started — because Americans are already voting.

Forty-three days.

That is all that remains until November 3, when Americans decide control of Congress for the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency.

But here is the part that changes the story:

Voting has already begun.

Virginia opened in-person early voting Friday. Minnesota and South Dakota began absentee voting. Other states will follow.

So November 3 isn’t the starting gun.

The gun already fired.

And at almost the exact moment ballots began hitting boxes, a remarkable series of stories started coming out of Trump World.

The Washington Post reports that advisers have become increasingly blunt with Trump about the political environment facing Republicans.

More importantly, according to four people familiar with his recent conversations, Trump is listening.

That may be the real story.

Not another poll.

Not another screaming cable-news panel.

Something changed.

Trump Has Seen the Numbers

Trump’s relationship with unfavorable polling is hardly mysterious.

When he believes a poll is wrong, he says so.

Loudly.

But according to the Post, advisers have recently been putting increasingly difficult numbers directly in front of him, and the president has become more engaged with what they are showing him.

The reporting says he has approved roughly $140 million in spending from aligned super PACs, personally reviewed campaign advertising and pledged appearances connected to 35 competitive races.

One source told the Post that Trump wants to “fight like hell until Election Day.”

Forget whatever headline somebody wants to slap on that.

Watch the behavior.

Money is moving.

Ads are being reviewed.

Travel is being planned.

The president is getting personally involved.

You don’t deploy that arsenal because you think everything is fine.

Then Came 35

Now comes the number that explains some of the urgency.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week placed Trump’s approval rating at:

35 percent.

That was actually two points higher than the previous Reuters/Ipsos reading of 33 percent.

But the congressional number may be more important.

Asked which party they would support for Congress, respondents broke:

Democrats: 44 percent

Republicans: 37 percent

A seven-point difference in that national survey.

Now kill the hysteria before it starts.

That does not mean Democrats automatically control Congress on November 4.
