CNN just dropped an extraordinary report: an AI-assisted intelligence assessment allegedly misidentified cargo aboard a Chinese vessel and pushed the U.S. military toward an interception before officials discovered the mistake.

That story deserves attention. But so does its timing.

Days earlier, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing frontier AI development. President Trump publicly rejected the AI-doom argument. Then CNN’s report landed during the same news cycle in which Trump escalated his confrontation with CNN and the White House attacked the network’s reporting record.

Coincidence? Narrative convergence? Or simply an extraordinary story breaking at an extraordinary moment?

Today we’re separating what is documented, what CNN’s unnamed sources allege, and what remains completely unknown.
