Something happened across the political and cultural landscape this weekend that almost feels impossible to summarize.

From Enes Kanter Freedom’s explosive WNBA confrontation and Toronto’s new she/they turtle mascot, to Hasan Piker’s controversial Charlie Kirk performance, Abdul El-Sayed’s attacks involving Usha Vance and Natalie Harp, the growing influence of Democratic Socialists and AOC suddenly distancing herself from “Woke 1” politics—the fractures are getting harder to ignore.

Then came one final report involving preparations surrounding a former U.S. president.

And it may be the perfect metaphor for what’s happening inside the Democratic Party itself.

🚨 WHY Are They Preparing a PRESIDENT’S FUNERAL?! Something Went VERY WRONG This Weekend!

At some point politics stopped being politics and became performance art. This weekend may have been the moment America finally noticed.

There are weekends when the news cycle moves fast.

Then there are weekends when you open your computer Monday morning and wonder whether somebody accidentally changed the timeline.

This was the second kind.

Over roughly 48 hours, women’s basketball became another front in America’s culture war, a political streamer turned the death of Charlie Kirk into material for a cheering audience, a Democratic Senate candidate dragged the vice president’s wife into a political fight, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued distancing herself from the excesses of the previous progressive era, Darth Vader appeared before government officials to discuss mass surveillance, and Justin Trudeau danced through a hardware store with Katy Perry.

Then came the headline about a former president’s funeral.

And strangely enough, that may have been the most appropriate ending possible.

Welcome Back to the WNBA Culture War

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom attended Sunday’s Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game wearing a shirt defining a woman as an “adult human female.”

Late in the third quarter, Chicago guard Natasha Cloud approached him. Words were exchanged, Freedom stepped onto the court and security intervened before removing him from the area.

Those basic facts aren’t really disputed. The interpretation certainly is.

Freedom portrayed his removal as punishment for supporting women. The Associated Press account describes a confrontation that escalated after Cloud approached him and Freedom stepped onto the court.

But even that wasn’t enough WNBA culture war for one week.

Days earlier, the Toronto Tempo formally introduced two mascots: Dot, an Arctic hare, and Dez, a snapping turtle.

The team’s own announcement identifies Dez as using she/they pronouns, describes the mascot as a Taurus who DJs in their spare time, and notes an affinity for soft-shell tacos.

Yes.

We have reached the point where professional sports franchises are publishing the pronouns, zodiac signs and culinary preferences of fictional turtles.

Make of that what you will.

The important part isn’t the turtle.

The important part is how completely America’s larger cultural arguments now penetrate entertainment that was once primarily about…basketball.

Nothing stays outside politics anymore.

Then the Tone Got Much Darker

The weekend’s strangest stories might have remained merely ridiculous if they hadn’t quickly become ugly.

Streamer Hasan Piker appeared onstage during his Fear&LIVE tour and participated in a rendition of “We Are Charlie Kirk,” a meme song that became associated online with mocking Kirk after his assassination.

Video showed members of the audience laughing and joining in. Piker subsequently referenced “carrying the flame” on social media.

There is a distinction worth making here.

People are free to despise Charlie Kirk’s politics.

They are free to attack his arguments, his legacy and everything he represented.

But a functioning political culture needs some boundary between opposing someone’s ideas and turning that person’s murder into entertainment.

Once assassination becomes funny because the victim wore the wrong political jersey, we’ve crossed into something much more dangerous than left versus right.

We’ve entered a culture where political opponents cease being opponents and become objects.

That poison never remains confined to one side forever.

Politics Gets Personal

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed then generated another controversy after Vice President JD Vance criticized him.

Rather than keeping the argument centered solely on Vance, El-Sayed invoked second lady Usha Vance, asking whether JD Vance would take her “back in time to meet Papaw.”

Critics immediately interpreted the comment as a racial swipe involving Usha Vance’s Indian heritage. El-Sayed also posted a jab directed toward Trump aide Natalie Harp after President Trump attacked him politically. Fox reported that El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately explain the Usha Vance remark when contacted.

Maybe we’re missing the obvious.

Perhaps the problem isn’t simply whether the remark qualifies as racist, sexist or politically stupid.

Perhaps the problem is that politics has become so intensely personal that spouses, staffers, relatives and anyone standing nearby are increasingly considered fair game.

Attack the candidate.

Attack the policy.

Attack the record.

Why is everybody else being dragged into the cage match?

Meanwhile, Washington Quietly Does Washington

And then came one of the more revealing stories of the weekend.

While Americans are repeatedly told that Democrats and Republicans exist on opposite sides of an existential battlefield, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries privately met with Jared Kushner.

According to reporting from the Associated Press and The New York Times, the two discussed potential areas where Democrats and the Trump administration might cooperate, including housing, immigration and the cost of living.

And you know what?

Maybe that’s good.

Political opponents should be capable of entering the same room without throwing furniture.

But it exposes something important about modern political theater.

The public version of Washington frequently tells Americans:

THE OTHER SIDE WILL DESTROY AMERICA.

The private version sometimes says:

So, Jared, what can we get done on housing?

Never confuse the stage with the backstage.

Even “Woke” Is Getting Rebranded

Then there is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

AOC has recently been attempting to distinguish today’s politics from what she calls “Woke 1,” telling ABC that the earlier period was “crazy.”

Axios described the shift as part of her movement toward the cultural center while noting that her previous positions on policing, immigration and other issues remain politically relevant.

That’s fascinating.

Because political movements have a predictable lifecycle.

First they’re revolutionary.

Then they’re mainstream.

Then they’re unpopular.

Then everybody insists they were never really part of them.

We’re watching the marketing department rewrite the brochure in real time.

And Then Darth Vader Arrived

By this point, surely reality had exhausted itself.

Not even close.

At a San Diego government meeting debating Flock automated license-plate surveillance cameras, a man appeared dressed as Darth Vader.

He sarcastically endorsed the surveillance system as something the Empire would appreciate, using the stunt to criticize government monitoring and privacy risks.

The costume was ridiculous.

The underlying issue wasn’t.

Communities around the country are debating the enormous databases created by automated license-plate readers and who gets access to that information.

When Darth Vader starts making one of the week’s more coherent civil-liberties arguments, maybe we’ve officially reached peak 2026.

Meanwhile, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry went viral dancing inside a Montreal hardware store, reportedly using toilet plungers as props.

At that point, I assumed the weekend had surrendered.

Then I saw the funeral story.

Why Are They Preparing a President’s Funeral?

RadarOnline reported that Hillary Clinton has begun making plans surrounding the eventual funeral of former President Bill Clinton, including a possible memorial at Washington National Cathedral.

The report cites unnamed sources.

That matters.

There has been no announcement that Bill Clinton has died, nor credible reporting that his death is imminent. Clinton just turned 80 on August 19.

There is also an enormously important piece of context missing from the scary version of this headline:

Former presidents routinely participate in planning their own funerals years before they are needed.

Presidential state funerals are gigantic military, security and logistical operations. Families and former presidents commonly establish their wishes well in advance. PBS documented the longstanding practice during preparations surrounding Jimmy Carter’s funeral, while Congressional Research Service material details the extensive ceremonial responsibilities involved.

So no, the existence of funeral planning does not establish that something has suddenly happened to Bill Clinton.

But after the weekend we just witnessed, the symbolism was impossible to ignore.

Because perhaps the funeral headline isn’t interesting because of Bill Clinton’s mortality.

Perhaps it’s interesting because of what Bill Clinton represented politically.

The Funeral of an Era

The Democratic Party Bill Clinton led bears increasingly little resemblance to the coalition fighting over its identity today.

Clinton-era Democrats competed aggressively for working-class voters, talked about balancing budgets, signed welfare reform legislation and deliberately pursued the political center.

Today’s Democratic Party is fighting several wars simultaneously—against Republicans, among establishment figures and progressives, over cultural politics, over socialism, over immigration, over policing and increasingly over what the party itself is supposed to become.

That doesn’t mean the Democratic Party is literally dying.

It could perform extremely well in the November midterms.

It could regain political power.

Parties reinvent themselves constantly.

But political parties can survive while versions of those parties die.

The Reagan Republican Party changed.

The Bush Republican Party changed.

The Clinton Democratic Party changed.

The Obama Democratic Party changed.

And Trump’s rise completely detonated several assumptions about what Republican politics was supposed to look like.

That is how political history works.

The institution survives.

The identity gets buried.

Which is why, after watching one completely insane weekend unfold, the headline about preparations for Bill Clinton’s eventual funeral almost felt too perfect.

Maybe the real funeral isn’t for a president.

Maybe it’s for the political era he represented.

And judging by what we witnessed this weekend…

somebody may already be measuring the coffin.
