Kamala Harris tried to help a crucial Democratic Senate candidate — and the campaign quickly distanced itself from national endorsements. Chelsea Handler delivered a remarkable Roe v. Wade warning. Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer reopened the COVID lockdown debate. And Michigan’s newly nominated progressive Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is already facing warning signs in the general election.

But the biggest twist came from an Obama-appointed federal judge who just handed the Trump administration a consequential immigration victory — after a Republican congressman had already filed articles of impeachment against her. Then President Trump delivered two moments of his own that changed the entire tone of the story.

The Democrat machine isn’t dealing with one problem anymore. It’s dealing with problems everywhere.

Beware the Blob and the Burrito: Something Is Happening Inside the Democratic Big Tent

Hasan Piker wants Democrats to defend him. AOC says the old “woke” era went too far. Abdul El-Sayed is doing Blue’s Clues. Hakeem Jeffries wants “dramatic” Supreme Court reform. Separate stories? Maybe. But put them together and something interesting starts to emerge.

Beware the Blob.

And beware the burrito.

Yes, I realize that sounds like the title of the worst horror movie ever made.

But stick with me.

Because something fascinating is happening inside the Democratic Party’s famous “big tent.”

On one side are establishment Democrats trying to hold together a massive political coalition.

On another are democratic socialists attempting to prove their politics can win outside the deepest-blue districts in America.

And floating around the perimeter are enormously influential political personalities like Hasan Piker, who aren’t Democratic Party officials at all—but can reach millions of younger voters.

Suddenly everybody seems interested in broadening the audience.

And that’s where the Blob begins.

Hasan Piker Wants Democrats to Defend Him

Hasan Piker recently delivered a remarkable message to Democratic leaders.

Defend me.

Piker argued that Republicans are using him as a political weapon against Democratic candidates and said Democrats eventually need to recognize that he is part of their broader coalition.

That doesn’t make Piker a Democratic official. He isn’t.

It doesn’t make him a DSA officeholder.

And it certainly doesn’t mean every Democrat agrees with him.

In fact, that disagreement is precisely what makes the story interesting.

Piker is effectively arguing that whether establishment Democrats like him or not, the voters and political movement he represents are already occupying space inside the larger anti-Republican coalition.

Then comes the baggage.

Piker’s infamous 2019 statement that “America deserved 9/11” has again become an issue. He has attempted to explain the context and wording surrounding the remark as political opponents revive it during the 2026 election cycle.

The larger political problem is obvious:

How do you expand a movement while making yesterday’s rhetoric less politically radioactive?

Funny you should ask.

AOC appears to be wrestling with exactly the same problem.

AOC Discovers “Woke 1”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently offered a memorable description of the politics surrounding 2020:

“Woke 1 was crazy.”

Her broader argument was that candidates shouldn’t necessarily be permanently defined by positions and rhetoric from the extraordinary political environment surrounding 2020 and the pandemic. Current candidates, she argued, should be judged by what they’re proposing today.

That’s politically significant.

Because it provides a potential off-ramp from some of the positions that became liabilities for progressive politicians.

Don’t spend six years defending every slogan.

Change the conversation.

Move toward affordability.

Healthcare.

Housing.

Wages.

Economic populism.

Make democratic socialism less about the cultural battles voters associate with 2020 and more about their bank accounts in 2026.

Whether voters accept that transformation is another question entirely.

But the repositioning itself is worth watching.

And Then There Was Blue’s Clues

Enter Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

In a campaign video originally posted in June and suddenly rediscovered across social media, El-Sayed performed a Blue’s Clues-style parody encouraging Michigan voters to use mail-in ballots.

Yes.

Really.

The song.

The clothes.

The whole thing.

It’s easy to laugh.

And believe me, people are.

But underneath the cringe is Politics 101.

Make the candidate familiar.

Make him approachable.

Make him harmless.

Make politics feel less like revolution and more like children’s television nostalgia.

I’m not claiming somebody distributed a secret consultant memo ordering Piker, AOC and El-Sayed to soften their image.

There is no evidence of that.

I can’t show you the consultant memo.

I can show you the behavior.

And right when the progressive side of the tent appears interested in expanding its reach, somebody walks toward the center of the ring from the opposite direction.

Hakeem Jeffries Enters the Tent

Hakeem Jeffries is important precisely because he isn’t a democratic socialist.

The House Democratic leader has previously separated himself from hard-left democratic socialism.

Keep that fact straight.

Then look at what he said this week.

Jeffries declared that “dramatic Supreme Court reform is necessary” and said Democrats should keep multiple reform options available rather than ruling them out. Reporting surrounding his comments has identified proposals under discussion ranging from term limits and ethics rules to increasing the number of Supreme Court justices.

That does not mean Jeffries announced Democrats will pack the Supreme Court.

He didn’t.

The actual statement is dramatic enough without changing it.

But zoom out.

AOC is reconsidering baggage from the progressive movement’s past.

Piker is demanding recognition inside the Democratic coalition.

Progressive candidates are trying to make themselves culturally accessible.

And the establishment leader of House Democrats is simultaneously talking about dramatic structural reform of one of America’s three branches of government.

That doesn’t make these people ideologically identical.

That’s not the Blob.

What the Blob Actually Is

Political coalitions don’t require everyone to agree.

They require everyone to decide which disagreements they can tolerate.

Republicans have exactly the same phenomenon.

Libertarians, populists, evangelical conservatives, establishment Republicans, national-security hawks and economic nationalists frequently disagree—sometimes viciously.

Yet elections force coalitions together.

The question confronting Democrats is therefore not whether Hakeem Jeffries secretly became Hasan Piker.

He obviously didn’t.

It’s this:

How far can the Democratic big tent stretch before the boundaries between its factions begin moving?

Because while politicians argue about ideology, ordinary Americans are worried about something considerably less academic.

The burrito.

Never Underestimate the Burrito

A debate recently erupted online around an extraordinarily simple complaint:

Why does a burrito cost so damn much?

And underneath the jokes is possibly the most powerful political issue in America.

Affordability.

Rent.

Groceries.

Insurance.

Cars.

Healthcare.

Utilities.

Eating out.

People may never read a political platform.

They read receipts every day.

And that is exactly why economic populism is such valuable political territory.

Piker himself invoked the cost-of-living crisis while arguing Democrats should stop allowing Republicans to make him the issue.

Democrats officially emphasize lowering costs.

Democratic socialists emphasize affordability.

Republicans hammer inflation and household expenses.

Everybody wants ownership of the burrito.

Because whoever convinces Americans that they understand why life costs so much gets an enormous advantage in the next political realignment.

But Here Comes the Part Nobody Is Reading

This is where today’s story ends.

Because while everyone is arguing about personalities, presentation and political branding, the Democratic Socialists of America have done something considerably more useful.

They published what they want.

The DSA’s current official program calls for, among other things, abolishing the United States Senate, expanding the House and introducing proportional representation and ranked-choice voting.

Those aren’t Republican accusations.

Those aren’t cable-news interpretations.

Those are positions published by the organization itself.

And that’s where Part Two begins.

Because before Americans decide whether democratic socialism has simply found a more appealing sales pitch, they should probably examine the actual product.

Forget the Blob.

Forget Blue’s Clues.

Forget Hasan.

Forget Hakeem.

Forget even the twenty-dollar burrito.

Read the program.

Then decide for yourself whether America’s political big tent is merely getting bigger—

or whether something much more consequential is taking shape underneath it.
