Yesterday offered America two radically different pictures of modern politics.

In one, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was joking with his wife about marriage, missed flights, Pete Hegseth’s cat, RFK Jr.’s meat cooler and apparently Rubio’s own weakness for Pop-Tarts.

It was funny. Human. Relatable.

For a few minutes, Washington looked almost normal.

Then you looked across the political landscape and saw something entirely different: an increasingly bitter fight over socialism inside the Democratic Party.

And buried inside that fight is one question Democrats may soon have a very difficult time avoiding:

Are you capitalist—or socialist?

Because some Democrats have already put that question in writing.

Democrats Wrote the Pledge

A centrist Democratic organization called Promise to America recently published a remarkably straightforward declaration of principles.

Its first statement:

“We are capitalist, not socialist.”

Then come five more:

“We want safety, not lawlessness.”

“We are responsible, not reckless.”

“We believe government should solve problems, not create them.”

“We are mainstream, not extreme.”

“We are proud, not ashamed of America.”

Read those again.

This wasn’t written by Republicans.

It wasn’t drafted by Donald Trump.

It wasn’t produced by Fox News or some conservative think tank.

Democrats wrote it.

And they wrote it specifically as centrist Democrats became increasingly concerned about the strength of democratic socialism inside their own political coalition.

When the initiative was publicly launched in June, The Washington Post reported that just 13 Democratic House members and congressional candidates had signed onto it. The House currently contains 212 Democratic representatives.

That comparison requires an important qualification.

Thirteen signatories did not mean 199 House Democrats had personally been handed the document and defiantly refused to sign it. Some of the 13 were candidates rather than sitting members, and absence from a public list is not proof that someone secretly supports socialism.

But that’s almost beside the point.

The remarkable fact is that Democratic centrists believed the ideological battle had become serious enough that they needed to create a declaration beginning with:

“We are capitalist, not socialist.”

That sentence would have sounded almost absurdly unnecessary inside a major American political party a generation ago.

Today it is apparently necessary enough to become an organized political initiative.

Wisconsin Sent One Message. Michigan Sent Another.

The Democratic electorate isn’t moving in one uniform ideological direction.

Wisconsin proved that this week.

Democratic socialist Francesca Hong came extraordinarily close to becoming the Democratic nominee for governor before moderate Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley defeated her by less than one percentage point.

So anyone claiming democratic socialism has simply “taken over” every Democratic primary would be ignoring reality.

Socialists can lose.

But Hong coming within inches of winning a major swing-state gubernatorial nomination hardly proves the movement is politically irrelevant either.

Associated Press reporting on recent Democratic primaries describes something considerably more complicated: progressives have scored significant victories in several states while establishment candidates continue winning elsewhere. The party is undergoing a genuine struggle over its future.

That’s the part Americans should be watching.

Not the label.

The direction.

Forget What Republicans Say. Read What the DSA Says.

This is where the debate gets considerably more serious.

If you want to understand the Democratic Socialists of America, don’t begin with Republican criticism.

Begin with the Democratic Socialists of America.

Their current program is extraordinarily explicit.

It asks readers to imagine a future “without capitalism” and says the organization is fighting to transform American society, draft a new constitution and create what it calls a “democratic socialist republic.”

And those are merely the opening principles.

The DSA program advocates steps toward fully abolishing the police and prison system.

It calls to abolish ICE.

It proposes abolishing the Electoral College and replacing the current presidency and Supreme Court with institutions subordinate to Congress.

It calls to abolish the United States Senate.

And economically, it advocates public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries.

Again, those aren’t accusations.

Those are policy positions published by the DSA itself.

That’s why dismissing every concern about socialism as some feverish conservative “conspiracy theory” no longer works.

There is an organized socialist movement in American politics.

It has candidates.

It has elected officials.

It has an explicit political program.

And it intends to change fundamental elements of America’s economic and constitutional structure.

No, That Doesn’t Make Every Democrat a Socialist

Precision matters here.

Only two currently serving House Democrats were identified by The Washington Post in June as DSA-affiliated: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. The paper also noted that DSA candidates remain a minority of Democratic campaigns.

So saying “every Democrat is a socialist” would be inaccurate.

But saying socialism has become a meaningful force inside Democratic politics?

That is increasingly difficult to dispute.

In fact, centrist Democrats are telling us exactly that.

Promise to America was created because its organizers believe their party needs an organized alternative to the socialist left. Rep. Tom Suozzi summarized the distinction plainly: his faction disagrees with both MAGA and socialists and wants Democrats associated with the political mainstream instead.

Think about what that means.

The argument is no longer simply:

Republicans versus Democrats.

There is another argument happening simultaneously:

Democrats versus democratic socialists over what the Democratic Party itself will become.

The Question Is No Longer Whether the Fight Exists

Americans don’t need exaggerated claims to understand what’s happening.

The facts are strong enough.

Democratic socialists are winning some important elections.

They’re narrowly losing others.

Centrist Democrats are organizing specifically to resist their influence.

And the Democratic Socialists of America has now published a program openly contemplating a new constitution, a socialist republic, abolition of the Senate and public ownership of major industries.

That isn’t a secret takeover conducted in some smoke-filled basement.

It’s an ideological insurgency taking place in broad daylight.

Maybe the socialist wing ultimately wins control of the Democratic Party.

Maybe centrist Democrats successfully push it back.

Maybe the party somehow continues balancing both factions.

Those questions remain unanswered.

But the days of pretending the struggle doesn’t exist should be over.

Because Democrats themselves have now created a pledge whose first sentence asks them to draw the line:

“We are capitalist, not socialist.”

And that leaves one remarkably simple question for every American—and every elected Democrat:

Would you sign it?

Yes or no.
