Now, reporting on an updated Democratic Socialists of America platform raises a far more serious constitutional question.

Joy Behar says Donald Trump is destroying democracy.

In fact, according to Behar, America is now a “burning building,” and Democrats must win the presidency because Trump is supposedly tearing the entire system apart.

That is an extraordinary accusation.

It is also spectacularly timed.

Because just as Behar sounded the alarm over the destruction of American democracy, the Democratic Socialists of America reportedly adopted a new political blueprint targeting the Senate, the presidency and the Supreme Court.

Apparently, democracy is in mortal danger when Donald Trump controls one branch of government—but democracy is gloriously liberated when socialists redesign all three.

That is not irony.

That is political arson followed by a lecture on fire safety.

The Announcement They Could No Longer Hide

According to reporting on amendments adopted by DSA’s national leadership, the organization’s updated long-term program would eliminate the United States Senate and replace the independently elected president and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by—and subordinate to—Congress.

The reported platform also includes universal amnesty for illegal immigrants, dramatic reductions to America’s military, closing overseas bases, ending sanctions against foreign adversaries and dismantling what DSA calls the “carceral forces of the capitalist state.”

Those are not minor adjustments.

They are not tax proposals.

They are not demands for another federal program, a larger healthcare subsidy or an additional cabinet department staffed by people who believe spreadsheets are instruments of oppression.

This is a proposal to reconstruct the machinery of the United States government.

DSA’s own publications show that the movement’s hostility toward the existing constitutional system is not new. Its Socialist Forum has previously discussed abolishing the Senate, Supreme Court and Electoral College through a new constitutional framework.

The latest reporting simply pulls the curtain farther open.

First, Eliminate the Senate

The United States Senate is frustrating by design.

It moves slowly. It overrepresents smaller states. It routinely takes a relatively simple question and converts it into six hearings, 400 speeches and an emergency fundraising email.

But the Senate exists for a reason.

America was created as a federation of states—not merely a collection of population centers governed from Washington. The Senate gives each state an equal voice and creates a second barrier between political passion and federal law.

That delay can feel infuriating when government refuses to do what you want.

It becomes invaluable when government is about to do something insane.

Checks and balances always appear inefficient to people who are certain they should be in charge.

The Senate is not a defective House of Representatives. It serves a different constitutional function. Eliminating it would remove one of the largest obstacles preventing a temporary national majority from exercising nearly unrestricted legislative power.

And that is only the beginning.

Then, Replace the President

Under the reported DSA model, the president would no longer be independently elected by the American people. Instead, Congress would choose the executive.

Parliamentary systems do this in several successful democracies. The concept alone does not automatically create a dictatorship.

But context matters.

When the same political majority writes the laws and chooses the executive responsible for enforcing those laws, the separation between legislative and executive power begins to disappear.

For years, Democrats and their media defenders have insisted that Donald Trump represents a uniquely dangerous concentration of presidential authority.

Their answer is apparently to eliminate the independent presidency and hand control of the executive branch to Congress.

Because nothing protects the public from political power quite like giving more of it to Congress.

Brilliant.

Finally, Control the Courts

The judiciary is where the proposal crosses the constitutional Rubicon.

The reported plan would replace the Supreme Court with a judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.

Think about what that means.

Congress writes the laws.

Congress chooses the executive enforcing the laws.

Congress selects and controls the judges interpreting the laws.

One political majority could potentially influence nearly every meaningful function of the national government.

That is not checks and balances.

That is a government combo meal.

One election, one majority, three branches delivered directly to the ruling coalition.

An independent judiciary is not important because judges are always wise, neutral or correct. History has repeatedly proven otherwise.

Judicial independence matters because the court must occasionally be capable of telling the political majority no.

Rights mean nothing when the same institution that violates them also decides whether the violation was legal.

What Government Would America Become?

The kindest comparison is New Zealand.

New Zealand has a unicameral parliamentary government, competitive elections, peaceful transfers of power and a serious legal culture. Its executive emerges through Parliament rather than through an independently elected presidency.

But New Zealand also recognizes the critical importance of judicial independence.

It is therefore the pleasant showroom model: beautiful mountains, functional institutions, enormous numbers of sheep and a foreign-policy presence so quiet the rest of the world occasionally checks to make sure it is still there.

The darker structural comparisons begin when the legislature sits above the executive and judiciary.

Cuba’s National Assembly is constitutionally the supreme organ of state power. It selects the president, and its political structure places the courts within a system dominated by the state’s ruling authorities.

Cuba promised revolutionary liberation.

Decades later, its citizens have discovered that electricity, food and political disagreement can all become seasonal products.

China provides an even more disturbing example because its system is enormously effective—for the government.

China’s National People’s Congress is constitutionally the highest organ of state power. The executive apparatus flows beneath it within a broader Communist Party system.

China demonstrates that concentrated power does not always produce a government incapable of functioning.

Sometimes it produces a government frighteningly capable of functioning—especially when surveillance, censorship and political control are the objectives.

Then there is the Soviet Union.

The Soviet system formally vested supreme authority in its national legislature while actual power remained concentrated within the Communist Party.

It promised worker control and delivered bureaucratic control.

It promised equality and achieved the remarkable feat of making nearly everyone outside the political elite equally miserable.

Its five-year plans were so successful that every five years the government needed another plan explaining why the previous plan had failed.

DSA is not openly proposing Soviet gulags or Chinese one-party rule. Pretending otherwise would weaken the legitimate argument.

The real warning is structural.

When political leaders begin treating every restraint on government as an obstacle to democracy, freedom is already standing on dangerous ground.

Who Is Actually Burning the Building?

Joy Behar may be correct about one thing.

The building matters.

The American constitutional system is under pressure. Political trust is collapsing. Each party increasingly views the other not merely as wrong, but as illegitimate.

But democracy does not mean Democrats must win.

It does not mean Republicans must win.

It means the public retains the ability to throw either side out—and that neither side can capture the entire government with one election.

The Constitution was not written because America’s founders trusted good leaders.

It was written because they understood bad leaders would eventually arrive.

They divided power because ambition is permanent, corruption is predictable and every political movement eventually becomes convinced that history has given it permission to rule without restraint.

That is why this reported DSA platform matters.

It does not merely seek different outcomes from the American system.

It seeks a different system capable of imposing those outcomes.

So when Joy Behar says America is a burning building, perhaps someone should ask the obvious question:

Why is the movement generating so much excitement inside the Democratic base arriving with a blueprint to demolish the Senate, replace the president and place the courts beneath Congress?

Donald Trump may or may not be the threat his opponents claim.

That debate will continue.

But the solution to excessive presidential power is not eliminating the independent presidency, neutralizing the courts and handing Congress the keys to the entire federal government.

That is not saving democracy.

That is one election deciding who gets the whole damn country.
