In a stunning article published by HuffPost titled “It’s Time For The Biden Campaign To Embrace AI,” we hear some of the same talking points as always, but then are hit by a shock wave of stunning statements that are almost unimaginable that they were even written. As they write, “After the president’s dismal debate performance, he noted that he “might not walk as easily or talk as smoothly as I used to.” AI could help with this.”
The author writes that the stakes of the 2024 presidential election are incredibly high. With Donald Trump promising to act as a dictator “on day one,” it is no exaggeration to say that the future of American democracy is at risk. In this context, the Biden campaign faces a critical challenge: presenting a strong and effective image of President Joe Biden to a population and media landscape increasingly focused on optics over substance. Given the president’s concerning performance last week, the Biden campaign should consider leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to effectively reach the voting public.
While there are understandable hesitations about integrating modern technology into presidential campaigning, the consequences of not doing so could be severe. In the current, largely unregulated electoral environment, refusing to use tools like AI is akin to entering a boxing ring with one hand tied behind your back.
Joe Biden is older and has dealt with a lifelong stutter. This has sometimes hindered his ability to communicate consistently with mass audiences. AI augmentations and video renderings could help smooth out these bumps, allowing the Biden campaign to effectively disseminate accurate information about the state of our democracy and the Biden administration’s accomplishments. The president has limited time to campaign while also focusing on running the country, and AI would be a cost-effective and efficient way to communicate his message personally and directly to voters.
The author goes on to state that Despite an ambitious and widely praised first term in office, (I would liken it more to an episode of the Minions run the White House, but again I’m not a left leaning author, so I will digress for a minute) President Biden is currently trailing in polls to a man who incited an insurrection and was recently convicted on 34 felony counts. Clearly, something needs to change. Much to the chagrin of West Wing fanatics in the beltway, it won’t be the Democrats’ 2024 nominee. Modern technology offers a clear solution: AI can polish the president’s image, allowing voters to focus on his substance. How many times have we heard voters and pundits alike gripe that “Biden would be the perfect candidate if he were just 10 years younger?” With modern technology, this exact deliverable is possible.
Some may reasonably challenge the use of AI as dishonest and deceptive, but the current information ecosystem is arguably no better and may even be worse. Media outlets like the New York Post have engaged in sharing deceptively cropped viral clips of the president, dubbed ‘cheapfakes,’ to make him appear confused or weak. Though no excuse for Biden’s weak debate performance, CNN allowed Trump to lie for the full 90-minute debate with zero fact-checking. They offered fact-checking over an hour after the debate, which realistically, a mere fraction of the debate audience stayed tuned for. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have cracked down on political content, while right-wing billionaire Elon Musk has used Twitter to amplify false information about the election and boost Republicans. Even once great institutions like The Washington Post have transitioned into Murdoch-style tabloids.
Putting all this aside however and now coming to understand that Biden’s PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN has called in a Parkinson’s Disease Specialist, yes you heard me right, a Parkinson’s Disease Specialists (no one in the MSM was covering this now were they), is it really that far fetched to believe the left will try to ‘augment’ their candidate to make things appear for better than they are. Seriously, for the last couple years they’ve been doing the same damn thing and we now expect their tactics to change. Remember, their the ones who warned you of Deep or Cheap Fakes which normally means THEY ARE GOING TO USE THEM!! But, of course, as always, they blame the Right.
We must ask the question: are augmented AI videos that present Biden in his best form, while sharing honest and accurate information, really more socially damaging than our current information ecosystem’s realities? I think not.
Equivocating over the use of AI will do nothing to stop its abuse and misuse should Republicans regain power this November. It is incumbent upon the Biden campaign to use every tool available to ensure the president’s reelection bid is successful. Instead of seeking a new candidate, AI allows Democrats to address the main vulnerabilities of our current standard bearer while embracing an inevitability of modern politics.
