DESCRIPTION
Iran has repeatedly threatened President Donald Trump. U.S. officials say a credible threat forced extraordinary precautions surrounding his travel. Fighter jets and air-defense systems have protected presidential airspace.
Then more than 30 American municipal water systems were hit by a coordinated cyberattack—and U.S. officials reportedly assessed that Iran was likely responsible.
So what happens when the bullseye moves from one president to American infrastructure itself?
And while America confronts threats from abroad, another battle is exploding inside our own political system as the Democratic Socialists of America openly calls for dramatic changes to some of the country’s most fundamental institutions.
These stories are not evidence of one coordinated conspiracy.
But put together, they raise a much larger question:
What happens when America’s foreign adversaries encounter a country increasingly divided against itself?
Tonight, we follow the evidence.
And in Part Two, we’re going somewhere considerably more controversial.

They Had Trump in the Bullseye. Now America May Be in It Too.
Something deeply abnormal is happening around the President of the United States.
Iranian threats against Donald Trump have intensified. Graphic imagery has circulated depicting him dead. U.S. officials have reportedly treated threats against his life seriously enough to alter presidential travel, deploy extraordinary security measures, and surround him with layers of protection that would have sounded unthinkable only a few years ago.
Then the story got bigger.
Because this may no longer be only about Donald Trump.
American water infrastructure has also been targeted.
More than 30 municipal water systems in Minnesota were reportedly affected by a coordinated cyberattack, and U.S. officials have pointed toward Iran as the likely source.
That should change the entire conversation.
A president knowingly accepts danger when he assumes office. The family turning on the kitchen faucet does not.
The municipal employee operating a water system does not.
The small American town suddenly finding itself inside a geopolitical conflict certainly does not.
And that is the question America should be asking right now:
Has the bullseye moved?
The Threat Around Trump Is Becoming Impossible to Ignore
Consider what has happened around the president.
Reports indicate intelligence officials detected a credible Iranian threat involving Trump’s aircraft during foreign travel. Extraordinary precautions were taken, including switching aircraft and obscuring the president’s movements.
At Bedminster, Trump has been protected by fighter aircraft, restricted airspace and sophisticated air-defense systems.
NORAD has intercepted aircraft violating temporary flight restrictions around locations where the president was present.
Individually, each event can be explained.
Restricted airspace violations happen.
Presidential security is always substantial.
Threats against presidents are unfortunately nothing new.
But stack these events together and a disturbing picture begins to emerge.
Something has changed.
The security environment surrounding Trump has reached a level that deserves far more national attention than it is receiving.
And while America debates Trump every hour of every day, the more important story may be what those precautions tell us about the threat environment surrounding the United States itself.
Then They Went After Infrastructure
Cyberwarfare changes everything.
A foreign adversary no longer needs to send soldiers across a border to hurt a country.
It can attack the systems holding that country together.
Water.
Electricity.
Communications.
Transportation.
Financial networks.
Industrial control systems.
Programmable controllers.
The battlefield can be a computer terminal sitting thousands of miles away.
That is why the reported attack against American municipal water systems matters so much.
If Iran was indeed behind the Minnesota attacks, the escalation is profound.
This is no longer simply hostile rhetoric aimed at Trump.
It is potentially hostile activity aimed at American civilians and infrastructure.
And America cannot protect every water system the way it protects a president.
There cannot be F-16s hovering over every pumping station.
There cannot be Secret Service agents guarding every municipal control system.
That is exactly what makes cyberwarfare so attractive to hostile governments.
It attacks the seams.
The Most Dangerous Moment Is When America Is Already Divided
But there is another element to this story.
And this is where the conversation becomes politically uncomfortable.
America is confronting external threats at the same moment it is experiencing one of the most aggressive ideological battles over its own institutions in modern history.
The Democratic Socialists of America openly advocates major structural changes to American government and society.
Its program calls for abolishing ICE.
It calls for major changes to policing and incarceration.
It calls for abolishing the Electoral College.
It proposes restructuring the relationship between Congress, the presidency and the judiciary.
It calls for abolishing the United States Senate.
Americans are free to support or reject those positions.
That is democracy.
But pretending they are minor policy disagreements is ridiculous.
They represent a fundamentally different vision of American government.
And now even prominent voices on the political left are beginning to warn that Democrats may have allowed their most radical ideological factions to gain too much influence over the party.
That debate is becoming increasingly visible.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to represent one of the most powerful voices of the progressive movement.
Democratic Socialist candidates are winning consequential primaries.
Traditional Democrats are openly questioning where their party is heading.
None of that proves a foreign conspiracy.
It does, however, reveal something America’s adversaries understand very well.
A nation at war with itself becomes easier to weaken.
Foreign Enemies Do Not Need to Create Our Divisions
This is where restraint matters.
There is no evidence that the Democratic Socialists of America directed Iranian cyberattacks.
There is no evidence that progressive politicians are somehow operating as Iranian agents.
And attacking Americans based on their religion is both wrong and strategically foolish.
The larger point is much simpler.
Foreign enemies do not need to create every American division.
They only need to exploit the divisions already here.
Russia understands that.
China understands that.
Iran understands that.
Every sophisticated intelligence service understands it.
If Americans can be convinced that their political opponents are no longer fellow citizens but existential enemies, the country begins doing an adversary’s work for them.
Institutional trust collapses.
Political violence becomes easier to rationalize.
Propaganda becomes easier to spread.
Every crisis becomes proof that the other side is evil.
And eventually, national cohesion disappears.
That is fertile ground for hostile foreign powers.
The Real Question
Perhaps the biggest mistake Americans make is searching for one giant conspiracy connecting everything.
Reality is often more dangerous than that.
Iran does not need to control an American political movement.
A domestic political movement does not need to cooperate with Iran.
Separate forces can still exploit the same national weakness.
One attacks infrastructure.
Another challenges institutions.
Political parties become increasingly radicalized.
Social media amplifies rage.
Americans stop trusting one another.
The result can become dangerous without anyone sitting in a secret room coordinating it.
That is the warning.
The Bullseye
Return to the image we started with.
A bullseye.
At first it appeared to be aimed squarely at Donald Trump.
Graphic Iranian threats.
Credible assassination concerns.
Extraordinary presidential security.
Fighter aircraft.
Air-defense systems.
Secret aircraft movements.
But then American water systems were attacked.
Suddenly the target looked much larger.
Because the most dangerous possibility is not simply that America has enemies abroad.
We have always had enemies abroad.
The most dangerous possibility is that those enemies are looking at America today and seeing something they have rarely seen before:
A country powerful enough to defeat almost any enemy from the outside…
but divided enough to potentially weaken itself from within.
Foreign adversaries will exploit weakness.
Political movements will pursue power.
Politicians will push boundaries.
That is what they do.
The responsibility of Americans is different.
Protect the Constitution.
Demand evidence.
Challenge radical ideology wherever it appears.
Reject political violence.
Defend critical infrastructure.
And refuse to allow political disagreement to become national self-destruction.
Because the greatest threat to America may not arrive aboard a missile.
It may arrive through a computer network.
A propaganda campaign.
A political movement.
Or simply through millions of Americans finally becoming convinced that the people living beside them are enemies.
Iran may have placed Donald Trump in the bullseye.
The question now is whether America itself has moved into it.
