The biggest AI companies are suddenly talking about slowing development, independent evaluators and federal regulation. Critics argue the timing is no accident: scare the public, regulate the industry, crush smaller competitors and build an enormous regulatory moat.
Lisa Haven thinks that argument deserves serious attention. I agree with part of it—but I think the central accusation goes beyond what the evidence currently proves.

The real question may not be whether there is a secret plan.
