In a recent gaffe, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the federal government doesn’t pay for illegal immigrants’ Medicare—a statement that’s flat-out false. While non-citizens aren’t eligible for traditional Medicare, the federal government does fund emergency healthcare and various programs that indirectly cover undocumented individuals. AOC’s oversimplified statement once again highlights a troubling misunderstanding of how taxpayer dollars are actually being spent.
